Caring for Wet Hair

Unlike what your grandparents may have told you, wet hair can't give you a cold, however, it can cause some serious hair damage if not treated properly.

Lets Dive in.

When our hair is wet, it is more fragile than when it is dry. It is more likely to be damaged by heat and pulling compared to dry hair.

WHY?

When hair is dry the proteins are made up of strong Keratin, when wet they transition to Hydrogen which is weaker and makes the hair more susceptible to damage. The hair's protective cuticle layer, when exposed to moisture gets distorted and leaves strands vulnerable. Combing damp hair will stretch it, and unlike a rubber band, it will not bounce back to its original state, the cuticle becomes deformed, causing it to lift and separate resulting in a rough and damaged hair texture.

My top 5 Do's and Don'ts

  • Do: Pump water out of your hair by taking fist-fulls, pushing towards the scalp, and squeezing in a pulsing manner.

  • Don't pull down and squeeze.

  • Do: use a t-shirt or flour sack towel to blot and squeeze your hair

  • Don't: Rub your hair or use a regular bath towel

  • Do: Apply a light detangler and use a wide-tooth comb or your fingers to remove any tangles

  • Don't: Use a wet brush to detangle hair

  • Do: use a heat protectant if blow drying or ironing

  • Don’t: Use heat on unprotected hair or at a temp above 300 for fine to medium hair and 350 for medium to thick hair.

  • Do: use a scalp brush to loosen build-up on the scalp BEFORE getting in the shower when your hair is dry

  • Don't: Use a scalp brush in the shower to scrub your scalp

Choosing the right shampoo and taking care of your scalp is crucial. Your scalp is the foundation from which your hair grows, and with a healthy scalp, you'll have stronger, healthier hair. It's important to address any irritations quickly, some scalp conditions can harm the scalp and, in turn, the hair. By selecting the appropriate shampoo and adopting the right styling routine, you can prevent damage when your hair is wet.
